Juan Escudero

born 1965 Bilbao
Juan Escudero graduated in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country in 1991, specializing in painting. In 1993 he turned away from classical painting to create a 3D animation company. In 2007 he returned to fine art with drawings and since 2017 has focused mainly on works in the field of etching. Escudero has lived in Barcelona since 1999.
“In my work, I make it my mission to make the entire creative process visible and not to make any corrections. I apply a system in which a first line prefigures as the bottom line and if an irregularity occurs, it is transmitted to the next line. Similar processes occur in nature, so that the final artwork is created from a combination of well-known patterns and shapes of substances, liquids, waves, etc.,” says the artist. “For me, the basic idea of drawing is not to represent something, but to activate a process. This is similar to the automatic drawings that we unconsciously make when we talk on the phone, comparable to musical improvisation. In my mind’s eye, the “matrix” appears already finished, the size of a work of art and its idea are already determined at the beginning. Then the etching process begins with its dynamic movement, capturing the diversity and richness of life.”
